A fresh to strong west-south-west wind, which reached a good 6 Beaufort in gusts This gave the beauties a room wind passage until shortly before Kiel-Feuer, the way back was for most of them still a stopover. The sun shone on the spectacle for a while as the clouds cleared.
Somewhat exhausted, the crews sailed into the harbour in front of the Kiel Yacht Club where the award ceremony took place in the evening.
The competition was divided into eight groups. Group one was made up of the classic twelve-man teams. Ten had entered, and "Trivia" won ahead of "Sphinx" and "Anitra". The second group was the large cruisers. The Spreizgaffelketsch "Senta" won ahead of "Peter von Seestermühe" and "Regina". Group three of the long slender yachts saw the 22-berth skerry "Pilgrim" ahead of the 5.5-berth "Fram II" and the 30-berth skerry cruiser "Bremen". Seven 7-KR yachts started in group four, with "Taranga" taking the top places ahead of "Piraya" and "Greta". The smaller KR yachts started in group five. Here places one to three were taken by "Vännina" ahead of "Perlicki" and "Momo". Among the pointed gates in group six, "Tonga" was ahead of "Astral" and "Saga". Creak boats, dragons and the like competed in group seven. Creak boat "Louise" took first place, sister ship "Triton" followed, and kite "Felix B." landed in third place. In the group of folk boats, "Ina" topped the list ahead of "Lord Jim" and "Louise". You can find all the results here.
The race off Kiel is part of the event "Rendezvous of the classics" from the Friends of Classic Yachts. The event always starts on the first weekend of Kiel Week. The yachts meet in Schleimünde on Thursday evening, from where a feeder race starts to Kiel-Holtenau. There, as has been a tradition for many years, the friends from the British Kiel Yacht Club invite them to a stylish barbecue. This year will be the last time, however, as the British are leaving Kiel at the end of the summer. However, the site could be preserved for the classics.
